Champions League Predictions

This season’s Champions League is now down to the last 16 with some exciting ties coming up. Inform your Champions League predictions ahead of the round of 16 with insight from Pinnacle's odds alongside team news and analysis.

Juventus vs. Lyon predictions

First leg score: Lyon 1 (Tousart 31’) – Juventus 0

A fortuitous Nicolas Tousart goal condemned Juventus to defeat against Lyon in one of the most surprising results among the first legs, and while they are still narrowly favoured to advance, their chances have dropped from an initial 85% probability to just over 53%.

Maurizio Sarri’s side presently lead Serie A courtesy of their strong results at the Allianz Stadium, where they have dropped just four points in 16 league matches. They also boast the Champions League’s all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo among their ranks, but he has managed just two goals in this season’s competition thus far.

This will be Lyon’s first competitive match since February and they ultimately finished 8th in Ligue 1 as a result of the season ending early on a points per game basis. Only PSG netted more away goals than the visitors in France's top flight during this campaign, although Lyon’s last seven Champions League away fixtures brought just two wins.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid predictions

Manchester City

Real Madrid

First leg score: Real Madrid 1 (Isco 60’) – Manchester City 2 (Gabriel Jesus 78’, De Bruyne 83’ (pen))

A Kevin De Bruyne masterclass enabled Manchester City to come from behind and defeat La Liga champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, and the market indicates they have reason to feel confident about their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

While City recently surrendered their Premier League crown to Liverpool, they have won six of their last seven Champions League matches at the Etihad Stadium, scoring a formidable 27 goals and enjoying four victories by a margin of at least two goals in the process. Only Bayern Munich have recorded a better expected goals return in the competition this season.

Losing the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie is somewhat uncharted territory for Madrid, having not done so since April 2016. Zinedine Zidane’s men have produced the best away record in La Liga this season, although they failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last seven Champions League knockout matches.

Barcelona vs. Napoli predictions

First leg score: Napoli 1 (Mertens 30’) – Barcelona 1 (Griezmann 57’)

Napoli turned in a determined display to earn a respectable 1-1 draw at home against Barcelona, although the market indicates that it will not be enough to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

The magnitude of the task facing Napoli is most acutely reflected by the fact that Barcelona have not lost a Champions League match at the Nou Camp since a 3-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in May 2013. Appropriately they also have the best home record in La Liga this season, dropping a mere four points in 18 matches while scoring just under three goals per game.

Napoli have won only two of their last nine away matches in European competition, managing a sole clean sheet during that time. However, they enter this match in strong form and have risen from 11th to sixth in Serie A during the second half of this season.

Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea predictions

Bayern Munich

NB: Percentages listed are for the second leg match, not to advance.

First leg score: Chelsea 0 – Bayern Munich 3 (Gnabry 51’ 54’, Lewandowski 76’)

Bayern Munich produced a typically dominant and clinical performance to dismantle Chelsea in the first leg of their tie, leaving Frank Lampard’s team virtually zero chance of advancing.

While this will be the host’s first competitive fixture in just over a month, they ended their domestic campaign in blistering style, winning 13 successive matches to secure the Bundesliga title before lifting the German Cup. Robert Lewandowski has netted 51 goals in all competitions this season and will be keen to add to that total against a Chelsea defence that has faced frequent criticism.

Chelsea have lost fewer matches away from home than at Stamford Bridge this season, although they will require a flawless performance to achieve what would undoubtedly be considered one of the biggest shocks in Champions League history. They have failed to progress from their last four Champions League knockout ties in which they did not win the first leg.
