Champions League Predictions

Champions League Predictions

This season’s Champions League is now down to the last 16 with some exciting ties coming up. Inform your Champions League predictions ahead of the round of 16 with insight from Pinnacle's odds alongside team news and analysis.

RB Leipzig vs. Tottenham Hotspur predictions

RB Leipzig

Tottenham Hotspur

80.20%

19.80%

First leg score: Tottenham Hotspur 0 – RB Leipzig 1 (Werner 58’ (pen))

A Timo Werner penalty proved enough to separate these sides for the first leg in London, and Leipzig are heavily expected to finish the job and book their quarter-final place at the expense of a Tottenham team who are clearly struggling in the absence of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min.

Leipzig have only won one of their last five home matches in European competition, although they have been defeated only once and averaged just over 2.5 goals per game at the Red Bull Arena in the Bundesliga this season.

Following their first leg defeat Tottenham have since suffered further demoralising losses against Chelsea and Wolves in the Premier League. They conceded 11 goals in their last five Champions League away matches, keeping a solitary clean sheet in the process.

Valencia vs. Atalanta predictions

Valencia

Atalanta

9.72%

90.28%

First leg score: Atalanta 4 (Hateboer 16’ 62’, Ilicic 42’, Freuler 57’) – Valencia 1 (Cheryshev 66’)

Valencia found themselves hopelessly overpowered by a free-scoring Atalanta side that have netted the third most goals (70) in Europe’s top five leagues this season, and the odds give them less than a 10% chance of overturning their 4-1 defeat.

While this is the furthest Atalanta have ever progressed in the Champions League, domestically they have produced strong away form, winning eight of 13 away runouts and scoring seven goals in two of their last three matches on the road.

Valencia have won six of their last ten home matches in European competition, although this run did include only one of three in this season’s group stage. Should they defy the odds and progress, it would be the first time they have reached the last eight since 2007.

Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid predictions

Liverpool

Atletico Madrid

51.12%

48.88%

First leg score: Atletico Madrid 1 (Saul 4’) – Liverpool 0

Defending champions Liverpool fell foul of a typically stern and defensively organised Atletico performance in the first leg, although they are still very narrowly favoured to remain in the competition ahead of Diego Simeone’s side.

Liverpool are undefeated at Anfield in 15 Champions League matches, winning 11 and keeping a clean sheet in seven. An Atletico goal will leave Jurgen Klopp and co. needing to score at least three to progress, although they achieved this on nine occasions at home in the Champions League since the start of 2017-18.

By contrast, Atletico have scored just five goals in their last seven Champions League away games, although they progressed from five of their last six European knock-out ties when they won the first leg. Atletico have been involved in a league-high 11 draws in La Liga this season.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Borussia Dortmund predictions

Paris Saint-Germain

Borussia Dortmund

52.11%

47.89%

First leg score: Borussia Dortmund 2 (Haaland 69’ 77’) – Paris Saint-Germain 1 (Neymar 75’)

Whilst an impressive brace from this season’s breakout star Erling Braut Haaland led Dortmund to a first leg victory, the odds give PSG a slight edge in advancing to the quarter-finals for what would be the first time in four seasons.

Dortmund were defeated in all but one of their last five Champions League away games, failing to score in three. They have not kept a clean sheet in their last five games in the competition, although they have also not failed to score in a match since they were defeated 4-0 by Bayern Munich in November.

PSG have only lost two of their last 11 Champions League home matches, although both of these were responsible for eliminating them from the Round of 16 in the previous two seasons. PSG have only conceded four goals in this season’s tournament, the fewest amongst the 16 teams remaining.

Juventus vs. Lyon predictions

Juventus

Lyon

54.60%

45.40%

First leg score: Lyon 1 (Tousart 31’) – Juventus 0

A fortuitous Nicolas Tousart goal condemned Juventus to defeat versus Lyon in arguably the most shocking result amongst the first legs, and whilst they are still favoured to advance, their chances have dropped from an initial 85% rating to just under 55%.

Maurizio Sarri’s side are traditionally very strong at the Allianz Stadium, having won five of their last six Champions League home games and dropped just two points there in Serie A this season. The competition’s all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo has netted 13 goals in his last ten Juventus appearances.

By contrast, Lyon have won just two of their seven Champions League away fixtures, although they did score in all but one. Only PSG (31) have netted more away league goals than Lyon’s 25 in Ligue 1 this season.

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid predictions

Manchester City

Real Madrid

86.99%

13.01%

First leg score: Real Madrid 1 (Isco 60’) – Manchester City 2 (Gabriel Jesus 78’, De Bruyne 83’ (pen))

A Kevin De Bruyne masterclass enabled Manchester City to come from behind and defeat La Liga leaders Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, and the market indicates they have reason to feel confident about their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

City have won six of their last seven continental matches at the Etihad Stadium, scoring a formidable 27 goals and enjoying four victories by a margin of at least two goals in the process. Only Bayern Munich have recorded a better expected goals return in the competition this season, suggesting they could be inclined to go on the attack in the second leg.

Losing the first leg of a Champions League knock-out tie is somewhat uncharted territory for Madrid, having not done so since April 2016. Zinedine Zidane’s men have produced the best away record in Spain’s top flight this season, although their expected goals against in the Champions League this season is the fourth worst amongst the teams remaining.

NB: Percentages listed are for the second leg match, not to advance.

First leg score: Chelsea 0 – Bayern Munich 3 (Gnabry 51’ 54’, Lewandowski 76’)

Bayern Munich produced a thoroughly impressive and ruthlessly clinical second half performance to dismantle Chelsea in the first leg of their tie, leaving Frank Lampard’s side virtually zero chance of advancing and all but ending their campaign.

Whilst the hosts will be about Champions League and Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski, Chelsea are facing a host of absentees: Jorginho and Marcos Alonso will be suspended, while long-term question marks remain over the fitness of N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham.

Chelsea have earned more points away from the home both domestically and on the continent this season, although they will require a flawless performance to achieve what would undoubtedly be considered one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s history.

Barcelona vs. Napoli predictions

Barcelona

Napoli

77.72%

22.28%

First leg score: Napoli 1 (Mertens 30’) – Barcelona 1 (Griezmann 57’)

Napoli turned in a determined display to earn a respectable 1-1 draw at home against Barcelona, although the market indicates that will not be enough to secure a spot in the quarter-final.

The magnitude of the task facing Napoli is most acutely reflected by the fact that Barcelona have not lost a Champions League match at the Nou Camp since a 3-0 defeat versus Bayern Munich in May 2013. However, Quique Setien has endured a somewhat mixed start as manager and their expected goals difference in this season’s competition is only +2.2.

Napoli have won only two of their last nine away matches in European competition, managing a sole clean sheet during that time. They enter this match in strong domestic form, winning four of their five matches in Serie A in February.
