Champions League Power Rankings

Champions League Power Rankings

Ahead of the Champions League group stage draw, Pinnacle’s Champions League Power rankings provide an overview of the best teams in the competition. Who will win the Champions league?

1) Manchester City

Outright odds: 4.690*

The reigning English champions were famously eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur at the quarter final stage last season on away goals, after Raheem Sterling’s injury time goal was disallowed following a VAR check.

Having completed a domestic treble last season, by also collecting the FA Cup and League Cup, Pep Guardiola will be hungry to finally capture the Champions League for Manchester City this season – a competition which has so far eluded them.

With the summer additions of Rodri and Joao Cancelo however, Guardiola arguably has the best Man City squad ever at his disposal.

2) Juventus

Outright odds: 5.430*

Exiting the competition at the quarter final stage last season, after falling to surprise semi-finalists Ajax, Juventus have recent history in the Champions League final – losing to Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2016/17 and 2014/15 respectively.

Despite having not won the competition since 1995/96, Juve’s squad does contain players with significant European pedigree with Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Mandzukic and Sami Khedira all previous winners of the competition – with multiple other players having appeared in a final.

Having been dominant in Serie A for the past seven seasons, Juventus will be looking to add some European silverware to add to their impressive trophy haul.

3) Barcelona

Outright odds: 5.890*

2015 winners Barcelona had one foot in last season’s final, having beaten eventual champions Liverpool 3-0 in their semi-final first leg before uncharacteristically capitulating in the second leg to lose 4-0.

Enjoying domestic success for some time, Barca will be desperate to emulate their eternal rival Real Madrid’s recent success in this competition.

Their squad is experienced with World Cup winners Pique, Umtiti and Busquets forming the spine of the team - alongside the ever impressive Messi.

Summer arrival and fellow World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann should also add an extra level of firepower for one of Europe’s most feared teams.

The fact that record-signing Philippe Coutinho was deemed surplus to requirements demonstrates the quality within a squad equipped to once again challenge for another Champions League title.

4) Liverpool

Outright odds: 7.440*

Winners of the last season’s competition, and runners-up in 2017/18, Liverpool’s historic love affair with this competition is well evident, with last season’s 2-0 final victory against Tottenham Hotspur giving the Reds their sixth European Cup.

Free-scoring, and lethal upfront, the attacking quality of the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino is matched by the defensive resilience of Virgil van Djik and goalkeeper Ailsson Becker.

Pushing Manchester City all the way in last season’s Premier League, and beating Bayern Munich and Barcelona en route to last season’s final, Jurgen Klopp’s men were worthy winners last time around.

5) Real Madrid

Outright odds: 8.130*

Exiting last season’s competition at the round of 16  following a shock 4-1 home defeat to a young Ajax side, Real Madrid ended last season as a team in transition and in serious need of an overhaul.

Under Zinedine Zidane, who was re-appointment manager in March, the rebuild has quickly begun with the summer arrivals of Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic, among others, quickly strengthening the side in key areas.

Champions of Europe for a record 13 times, no team has more success in the competition than Real Madrid – and bettors would be quick to remember the side recently won the competition three years in a row, from 2015/16 till 2017/18.

6) Paris Saint-Germain

Outright odds: 8.550*

Also eliminated at the round of 16 last year, after conceding a 94th minute, VAR-awarded penalty to Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain have failed to make any serious inroads in their quest for European glory in recent years.

Dominant in their domestic league, Paris Saint-Germain’s mental strength in Europe has been questioned on numerous occasions in recent seasons.

However, the squad undoubtedly contains some serious talent with World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe joined by the likes of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria.

7) Bayern Munich

Outright odds: 12.760*

Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have had a busy summer with a number of high profile players going the club.

Philippe Coutinho arrived on loan from Barcelona, with Lucas Hernandez joining in an €80m move from Atletico Madrid – while Ivan Perisic also arrives on loan from Inter Milan.

Last winning the Champions League in 2013/14, Bayern were knocked out of last season’s tournament by eventual winners Liverpool in the round of 16 – and could perhaps benefit from better luck in the pot this time around.

8) Tottenham Hotspur

Outright odds: 20.510*

Last season’s beaten finalists Tottenham Hotspur had one of the most dramatic runs to the final in recent memory.

12 minutes away from being eliminated in the group stage in just their fourth game, Spurs benefitted from a late VAR decision against Manchester City in the quarter final, before a 96th minute Lucas Moura goal against Ajax sent them to the final.

However, with some impressive summer signings such as Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, to compliment the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping the North London side can go one better this year.

9) Borussia Dortmund

Outright odds: 27.700*

Thrashed 4-0 on aggregate by Tottenham Hotspur at the round of 16 stage last year, the Bundesliga runner-ups will be hoping for an extended stay in Europe’s elite competition this year.

Always a team with some of the best young talent in Europe, the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jacob Bruun Larsen and new recruit Julian Brandt will be hoping for a big season.
